What are the requirements for teaching English in Vietnam?

We Answered:

Job requirements in well established English language schools in Ho Chi Minh usually are:

- Native English speaker
- BA or MA (a degree essential for Work Permit requirements, but not always required by employers)
- TESL/TEFL Certificate

With this requirements you are looking at a potential salary of 1160 USD - 1500 USD per month for 21-23 hours per week + medical insurance allowance, flight allowance, end of year bonus + 20 working days paid annual leave and an additional 8 paid days off for national holidays.

In order to work legally in Vietnam you will need a visa + a work permit. Schools will often help their teachers with their visas application process and might even cover costs for both visa and work permit.

Although a degree is listed amongst the basic requirements for entry level teaching positions, Vietnam is reported to be one of those few countries where you can still be employed without a degree. However this will largely depend on the employer and their specific job requirements.

Can teaching English be a lifelong career?

We Answered:

Yes, definitely.

You'll need a degree (almost any, but English related is better) and to begin with a TEFL certificate. After that and a few years experience you can take further qualifications and move up or - as many people do - stay in a neat job for as long as you like!

Does anyone know of any websites that provide info on teaching English in Vietnam?

We Answered:

My advise is that if you're looking for an English teaching job, Ho Chi Minh city is a better place than Hanoi, because the demand is higher. It's pretty much like Bangkok in Thailand. Otherwise, Hanoi is also okay if you like to live in a pleasant place. Take a look at this website for more recruitment information (updated everyday):

Teaching English in Vietnam or Thailand?

We Answered:

Qualified English teachers with your credentials are highly sought after and in great demand here. There are dozens of international schools and English language schools that are always in need of qualified native English speaking teachers.
You would have no problem having one of these schools sponsor a work permit for you, should they hire you. I'm sure if you google or yahoo "Thailand international schools," you will find many of the schools listed. Just contact the schools that may interest you and see what kind of feed back you get. You might want to come over and and visit these schools in person, and also get an idea of what Thailand is like and see if you would like to live here. Good luck.
