Brittany Said:

If I get my biology teaching credentials from Liberty University can I teach high school biology?

We Answered:

Not in my state. Liberty University doesn't provide certification for my state.

However, I once worked with a guy who got an English degree from a crazy little school (IIRC, it was Bob Jones, but I may be mistaken) who went on to become a High School English teacher... and he had to meet the same standards, take the same tests, and do the same service requirements as someone from any other school...which meant passing standardized tests where 'goddidit' is not an answer and behaving acceptably as a student teacher in a secular school.

There is a reason why a degree (for example) in biology alone does not qualify one to teach biology to kids, and part of that reason is that teachers need to be taught how to teach, including when to teach the required material objectively.

Bill Said:

Do you think it's possible to teach high school biology in the day time and be a nurse at night?

We Answered:

Remember that high school teachers' days don't just stop at 4:00. Most teachers have to grade papers, do lesson plans, participate in "staff develpment," may have to tutor, may have to take extracurricular activity sponsorships, etc.

I don't know how part-time nursing would work, because there's pretty much no way that you could have both full-time jobs (you'd be doing nothing more than working and sleeping, and as interesting as it may sound, you will get very tired of it very quickly... everyone needs time to relax, unwind, have friends, do leisure activities, etc.)

I don't mean to stop your dreams, just be realistic in your goals.

Teaching High School with a Bachelors in Biology?

We Answered:

It really depends on what state you're in. If you're sure that you want to teach, go for the Secondary Ed Biology...most places are crying for Science teachers and only use alternative certification really as a last resort. Especially now that the economy is bad...get the proper certification from college and you'll be more hire-able as a teacher. You're also not limited to schools that are desperate for teachers.

Alt. Cert. teachers (I was one) have to jump through a lot of hoops to get certified while teaching a full class load. It's easier just to get it done while you're in college.

Good luck!
