Can someone give me detailed info on what high school and college psychology classes are like?

We Answered:

Well, you're definately asking two different questions here. I took plenty of psychology classes in high school and am now a psychology major in college so I'll see what I can tell you.
High school- Bar none your high school experence is going to be a lot different depending on what high school you go to. But typically intro to psych classes in high school are going to be teaching you about historical theorists and how their theories play into todays society and why they are so important. This could include a lot of bookwork. They may also include all that fun stuff people love to hear about psychology- such as optical illusions, some beginning group processes stuff (like how everyone in a group will vote one way or another based on how people in the group before them voted, even if they know what they are saying is totally wrong) fun stuff, but not usually complicated stuff. Also not very in depth- the teacher may run experiments on the class to demonstrate this stuff cause that's just fun. High school psychology classes are not complicated, should be a relatively easy pass depending on the teacher.

In college---- classes are obviously more complicated. But psychology is one of the most popular college majors, so by most standards that means it's pretty easy. Until you get into really high level classes if you are a good student you should expect to be ok passing here as well. You will find a little bit of everything in these classes. The intro classes will be the same sort of thing as high school except with a little more depth and more brain, biological reasons as to why people do things. You will also learn more about developmental theories and theorists. Every kind of psychology class is offered at college. In every disipline: social psychology, group processes, organizational psychology (in sports or companies), research psychology (performing experiments), biopsychology (all about the brain), all kinds of stuff---and luckily most psychology majors allow you to experence a little bit of everything!

high school psychology question !!! please help : )

We Answered:

I had the best HS Psychology class. It was so fun
some of the things we did included:
--taking a poll to determine what people like in cereal, and then designing our own cereal brand
-- We had to do an experiment to determine whether or not people react differently to stereotypes or what is expected. For example, my group dressed in different styles (goth, prep, and business suit) to see how many job applications we could pick up from some shopping centers (business suit won). Or another group dressed in different things and asked for hugs. There were alot of thing you could do.
-- We also did alot of quizzes that determined how you fit into a particular form of psychologist's theory- like trying to determine what your MBTI was, your freudian type, your learning style, your emotional IQ, etc.
-- The part that everyone liked learning about the most though were psychological diseases. We watched videos about them, and went pretty in-depth about them
-- Oh, and we watched videos on the Blue/Brown eyes experiment, and the Stanford Prison Experiment

And, at the end of the year, we had all really learned the material, and had good AP scores, even though it was only a 9 week course!

Edit: I forgot to mention our main topics
-- the brain: we learned to be able to map out a complete diagram of the brain and lable it, knowing what each part does
-- Pavlov's Dogs
-- Freudian Psychoanalysis
-- Monkey nurturing experiment (I don't remember who did it)
-- Jonestown Massacre and Groupthink
-- Lots of stuff on Schitzophrenia
-- well, basically we just went alllll the way through the text book

Brittany Said:

Is it possible to teach high school with just a B.S. in Psychology?

We Answered:

In Massachusetts, which has fairly strict requirements for teaching credentials, you can teach for 5 years with a preliminary license as long as you have a Bachelors in the field you want to teach in (or a related field) and pass the subject test and literacy test for teachers. After 5 years, you need to show that you are working towards getting your masters or complete a teaching program to get the initial license (which would give you another 5 years before you would need to show that you were working towards a masters degree). Unfortunately, I don't know about the teaching requirements in Wisconsin and surrounding states. You could also try for assistant counselor positions if they have such a thing. You probably can't be a counselor without a degree in school psychology but you might be able to get some kind of assistant position if that interested you. Anyway, good luck in your teaching endeavors! Kids are amazing.
