Lynn Said:

How can I effectively apply differentiated instruction in teaching Math to grade 4 students? Paul?

We Answered:

First, pre-assessment. See what they already know based on the subject...say estimating sums.

Now look at your pre-assessment and divide them into 3 groups: low, medium, high.

Then, tweak whatever "main" activity you were going to use for estimating sums to make something that's easier and gives step by step instructions, and something that's more difficult with fewer instructions and more higher order thinking. If you use Chicago math, at the back of each lesson is an example of what to use for enrichment (high) and readiness (low).

When it's time for math, explain what the topic is for today then show your kids the groups. You can circulate or work with the low group.

Differentiation is great because, if you choose the right material and enough of it, kids are working independently: there are no behavior issues! The point is to match the work to the student's level, so it's not too easy (and they're done in a flash) and it's not too hard (and they demand all of your attention.)

Jeffrey Said:

What are some hands-on ideas for teaching math to high school students?

We Answered:

The best and most overlooked way to improve classroom education of any kind is to introduce the use of boardgames. I have taught for over ten years all over the world, and only when I use boardgames do students voluntarily insist on extending their classes for two, three, even four hours. Not only that but they then show the most rapid improvement.

Give it a try and you will be amazed. At least you will be helping to break the monopoly that the big textbook publishers have over the education industry.

Eddie Said:

can i teach math at a community college in california with an MA in teaching?

We Answered:

Your chances would be better if your Master's was in math, at the CC level.

Debbie Said:

Could I make a decent living teaching math at a junior college?

We Answered:

Every different college has a different salary schedule. I addition what you might consider to be a decent salary someone else might not.

I would suggest, therefore, that you contact several community colleges in your area or the area that you might relocate too and inquire about their salary schedule. You do have going for you that generally speaking Math is a shortage area.

Want to get a Teaching Credential in Business or Math?

We Answered:

No it is not as bleak as it seems. It depends on where you live. Many states have alternate routes to certification. In some states you can teach while working on getting certified. Do your own research in the state you live in for alternate route to certification. Good luck
