We were required to keep a portfolio beginning in Methods and continuing through Student Teaching. You should have work samples to show that you can create lesson plans and even unit plans. Samples of student work created from the lesson plans would be helpful as well.Here are some of the things that were in my portfolio:
resume
philosophy of teaching
Copies of college transcript
Copies of teaching certificate
Copies of TExES scores - to show you passed
technology work samples - worksheets, transparencies, etc that I had personally created
seating charts -for your ideal classroom
lesson plans
6 week unit plan with lesson sample
Sample tests (I made a math test)
Other assessments (P.E.)
Performance rubrics (P.E)
PDAS appraisal forms - completed by my methods and student teaching supervisors
PDAS self-reports - I had to fill these out about myself at the end of methods and student teaching.
Those are just a few of the things I had. We had to have ours in a 3-ring binder and in sheet protectors. We also had to have dividers in the binder to break it into different categories (16 dividers in methods, only 4 in student teaching). Make sure the binder is not too big for what you ave in it - if it is too big, it will look like you really don't have very much to show. If the binder is too small for what you are putting inside, it will be frustrating to look at. Not everyone looks at portfolios, but the ones that do will love to look at what you have if it is good and presented well.

Teaching jobs are fairly easy to find in North Carolina. You didn't say what you will be teaching but it shouldn't be a problem, I would say if you can find an opening in the Piedmont Triad that would be the best place to live and teach.I live in Winston-Salem and we are not too far from the coast or mountains. I have lived in other states but no place like North Carolina. And we have nice weather year round--like everywhere you will have extreme temps. sometimes.Good luck !!!!

Unfortunately, the teaching job fairs for this year are over.Don't give up hope on your job search, though-- oftentimes schools will hired teachers shortly before school starts. Last-minute changes in student enrollment numbers can cause a school to do some hiring right up to the time school starts. (I was hired for my first teaching job a week before school started.)
Go to the phone book and call all of the HR offices... ask if there are any anticipated last-minute openings. If you don't snag a position, subbing is still a good option.
