Julia Said:

what qualifications do you need to be a teacher in america?

We Answered:

Well, America has some pretty crazy restrictions on teaching licenses due to the No Child Left Behind act. The federal government requires that all teachers be "highly qualified" but what that means differs from state to state. This means that if I get a teaching license in New York, I might not be able to teach in California. I don't know how rigorous the program is in Ireland, and I don't know how it would transfer over here. Due to the inconsistency within the states, however, your best bet would be to move here to the US, preferrably where you want to teach music. Another warning: Many schools are cutting their funding for Music- music teaching jobs are few and far between here in the US. Good luck!

Teaching Jobs In America?!?

We Answered:

It's not AS easy to find a job as an English teacher here, we mostly need science, math and special education

There are lots of openings for English teachers, but if there is a particular area you are moving to, chances are they aren't looking for an English teacher. to get a job as an english teacher you need to be able to move to where they have the openings.

Also it is best that you get your degree in English (if you want to teach high school or middle school -grades 5 to 12). And then minor in education, or just take a few classes for education to get used to it if your university doesn't offer a minor in education (mine didn't) THEN, after you graduate, get a Masters of Teaching here in the states that will give you certification for teaching, OR, get a postbaccalauret through something like WGU (this is what I'm doing because it's online and you can do it anywhere and it gives you certification to teach in every state) and its quicker than a Masters. But you need to get your certification here in the states and do your student-teaching here too if you want to make it an easy process.

But that's the process: Get a degree, then get certification

Or you could get your degree in English education. But its better the other way. You'll be more in demand if your degree is in English, not education

Jerry Said:

Can I apply at a company here in America that finds teaching jobs in Asia if I have a misdemeanor?

We Answered:

Yes, you may apply because misdemeanors are usually not a big deal, and it's up to the Chinese government whether or not to allow you in. You would need to apply at the company, and they should handle communications with the embassy. If the company says you're not qualified, then its because China won't allow you.

Louis Said:

Do you know any agency different from VIF which helps teachers to get a teaching job in America?

We Answered:

Maybe the American embassy can direct you. Good luck!

What are some teaching jobs/fellowships, similar to Teach for America? ?

We Answered:

Im sorry to be the bearer of bad news - but I know those programs well. The unstated rule for all similar programs is that they are looking for future teachers. They are not looking to put their time and effort into people who for whatever reasons are going to leave at the end of the program.

Even at TFA's own website - they success stories they highlight all still have a connection to education.

To answer your question there are tons of regional programs that are designed to get people into the education field. The bad part for your particular situation - is that they are designed to get people in for the long run. It is very expensive to run a program that replaces state certification - ask any teacher who paid for it on their own. 2 Years graduate work at UCLA is nothing to sneeze at. That investment is expected to pay off.

calstate teach
NYC teachign fellowship
Citizen schools national teachign fellowship
Knowles foundation teaching fellowship
CSU Governors teaching fellowship

Plenty out there - quick search led me to some above.
Good luck to you!

Steps to finding permanent teaching job in South America or other Warm Places?

We Answered:

I agree with the other poster- to be honest, this is going to be almost impossible to do unless you speak Fluid Spanish (or I guess French in some of the countries, which may work for you if your from Quebec). They dont teach in English, and you need an entire TEFL degree to teach an English class in any other foreign country. There also typically not hiring foreigners given they need so much assistance with paperwork etc- they have too many locals with enough credentials to teach.

Thus, I would say have you considered Hawaii? They would probably have a place for you. Otherwise, if the southern US (Arizona, southern Texas- i.e. Houston, or Florida) arent warm enough for you, then you guys are pretty well stuck. You do understand that these places are going to have very similar temperatures to anyplace in South America, correct? And the southwest US is actually going to offer a better climate for any medical issues you may have since it doesnt come with the humidity S.A would have. (And Florida does if thats what you need).

Other then that- you may need to find a new profession is all I could say if you really are dead set on South America. The educational systems are simply too different for them to take a license from Canada, its just not that simple sorry to say.

I want to find a teaching job in America.?

We Answered:

That should be very easy, especially if you already have a bachelor's degree in education. They are always looking for Math teachers. I live in Athens, Ga and there are openings here. Don't limit yourself to one sector. Try public and private schools. Send in your resume and references to district and private offices. You'll be hired in less than a month. It took me one day. Good luck.
