I have a IL teach. cert. and I am getting my IN teach. cert. Does anyone know how the job market is in el ed?

We Answered:

From what I understand, my friends who have their license here in Indiana are struggling to find jobs. BUT...I really think it depends on where you are looking. If you're not too picky in finding a job in Indiana, then I think you'll be alright. Here's the Indiana Department of Education's website link where you can browse positions. http://www.doe.in.gov/peer/positionsbyca… Good Luck and if you're teaching in Indiana...welcome!

I teach in IL. I have a school administration degree. I am willing to move. How easy is it to switch states?

We Answered:

It's hard to switch because people may not pick your resume over others because they know you are going to have to get re-certified. It can take up to 9 months to get re-certified from state to state (At least I know it can take that long from SC to GA). I would say pull all of your contacts. With such a big move it's probably more "who you know" That way someone can get you a interview with a HR rep for a county or a interview with a principal. I would also apply with individual counties rather than overall states, a lot of people don't even download these from the internet b/c it takes time and they have people walking in and handing them resumes.

Which is better to get a job in IL MAT (master art of teaching) or certification?

We Answered:

Honestly, we had a meeting with interns (as I'm an intern this semester) with my county's school district. They said it varies from the school district and the hiring staff if they pick someone with a masters degree, someone with more experience, etc. A lot of states are trying to make it required to get a masters degree.

If you have your Bachelors degree you should get your certification anyway and may decide to work on your masters degree now or later. Good luck!

A job in Children's YA Literature?

We Answered:

(...deleted my former post when I saw you already do the things mentioned there...
...it was far too long with my own addition posted after seeing yours...!)

ADD:
Finally see your addition.
You can do a lot with a college degree that focuses specifically on Children's Lit.

1.) You can use such a degree (added to your current experience, which sounds good) to apply at children's magazines and/or publishing houses all over the country as a 'reader' - supervised even at a distance - going through "slush piles" (often rejects) to search for any possibles for publication.
1a.) Your education/experience will help you know - and your employers know you know - what children like; you'll probably get better pay for a job difficult to enjoy long.

2.) Then - maybe even first - you may be promoted as an assistant editor, then editor, at either the magazine or publishing house you choose to look again for the gems that help launch your career with better pay, benefits and prestige in the publication business of children's lit.
2a.) This job gives you the fun and extra advantage of using your ability to polish (read "edit") any piece you find worthy of the time.

3.) If your true passion is to write children's lit, you'll have loads of experience about it from several angles and will have tremendous knowledge and, more importantly, contacts, to help you reach that end after perhaps only a relatively short time.

Again, best of luck.
Sorry to get back to you so late on this. Saw you had only one answer and decided to check.
End ADD

PS. You might want to also minor for in "Library" as back-up... to be a reference librarian in a Children's section, as needed or wanted.
Librarians usually go to through a year or so more of school but for a Master's in Eng. Lit. etc., you can probably pick up at least an associate degree and get a good job.

When applying for an elementary school teaching position, what makes you stand out from other candidates?

We Answered:

One thing that makes you stand out already is your experience! Having taught in China, you no doubt have an excellent cultural background of experiences to bring to your classroom.

You'll need to emphasize to schools that your true passion is with elementary students. They may see you as lacking experience with older kids. Just them them know that elementary is where you REALLY want to be.

A few suggestions--

1. WHen you apply, don't just send in applications. GO directly to schools and introduce yourself to principals. Principals are more likely to interview people they've met.

2. Have a good teaching portfolio with you when you interview. Include student work samples, lesson plans, assessments, and anything else that shows what you've done as a teacher.

3. Be smiley, bubby, cheerful, positive, relaxed, and confident. Getting a job is mostly about showing off your winning personality and ability to teach.

Here's a good eBook that may help you find a job. It's Guide to Getting a Teaching Job ( http://www.iwantateachingjob.com ) It has advice for finding jobs, 50 Sample Interview Questions (and answers), Resume and Cover Letter Tips, and Lots More! Maybe the book can help you.

Best of luck with your job search.... you seem like an excellent candidate.... I betyou'll get swiped up by a school quickly. :)
