Best place to look for secondary school teaching jobs in Australia?

We Answered:

For all public schools teaching jobs are in effect assigned internally. You need to be registered with the state you are interested in teaching (which requires interview, qualification assessments, references etc) in. Then you are assigned "points" which determine your placement on the waiting list for jobs. If you have taught at a BAD school then you get more points per year of teaching than if you teach at a better school. So the more experienced teacher, who has taught at a bad school (behaviour etc) will get first pick on new jobs when they come up compared to a new graduate or new immigrant. Some disciplines find it easier to get work (Chemistry, Biology) which others (PE) it could take 7 years or more on the waiting list to get a teaching position in a public school.

Only private schools advertise in the paper and on job sites. Catholic schools are the more prolific in Australia followed by Anglican and general Christian schools. There are very few non-religious private schools. To teach in a Catholic school you generally have to show commitment to the Catholic ethos. More of the new jobs for 2010 were advertised at the end of October 2009.

Delores Said:

How are junior school teaching jobs usually obtained?

We Answered:

Teaching jobs are advertised on the council websites e.g. a job in Devon will be advertised on the Devon county website. Sometimes they are advertised in local papers and the TES (Times Educational Supplement) advertise some as well.

You have the interview at the school and it normally takes a whole day. At most schools you have to teach a group of children or a class for a session and have a formal interview with the head teacher and school governors. Sometimes these interviews are done separately. In some schools you other tasks to complete and sometimes you have interviews with the pupil council.

I don't know where the other person got the idea that you have to be finger printed from - maybe in some countries you do but not in the UK. You do have to be criminal record checked though to ensure you are safe to work with children.

Leonard Said:

Will public school teaching jobs be available in the future?

We Answered:

There will always be education jobs. But the "good" ones will be very scarce this year.

I know our principal has already indicated that our district may not be hiring very many "new" hires.

You just may have to travel to other areas or look into getting experience in areas that are usually less desirable to teachers (i.e. inner city/very rural).

And make yourself shine shine shine.

That being said, I think that everything is cyclical - and what comes around goes around and there will be times when there will be teaching jobs aplenty.
