How do you get certified to teach in the UK?

We Answered:

If you already have a degree you can do a one year PGCE course which will give you QTS (Qualified teacher status) alternatively you can do a GTP which will also lead to QTS.

PGCE is run through university and I would say has the advantage of giving you a broad range of teaching experience, you would do placements in at least 2 schools.

GTP is much more like working actually for the school. You spend the majority of time in 1 school and if you are supernumary (i.e. training in addition to the usual teaching staff) then the support would usually be excellent. However schools do use GTP's to fill posts which they can't fill and some of the worse schools do see it as cheap labour. However at the end of the day some people thrive on being pushed in at the deep end, so that may well suit you.

Good luck and congrats on joining a fullilling profession (It's half term holiday here at mo so us teachers are well rested!!)
