What do you teach a kindergarten student for science?

We Answered:

We just got a subscription to BrainPopJr.com, which was pricey, but quite fun. They're pretty good.

BrainPop supplements our core curriculum, which is K12.com. We pay for it, we're direct consumers rather than Virtual Academy students. Our K-Level Science is:

* Observing our world (what is observation? Five senses, etc.)
* My Body (bones, muscles, skin, hair)
* Introduction to Living Things (is it alive? How do you know?)
* Plants (What are seeds, what kind of plants do we eat, what do plants need to live?)
* Animals (Major types, skin coverings, food sources, etc.)
* Where do animals Live (habitats)
* Measurement (length, volume, weight, tools for each)
* What's the Matter? (What is "matter"? Solids, liquids, gas, turning matter from one state to another.)
* What's the weather? (sunny vs. stormy, how to read a thermometer, understand a weather report, what to do in weather emergencies)
* Seasons
* Planet Earth (land vs. water, shape of earth, build a model)
* Taking Care of Earth
* Farming
* Make it Move (push, pull and magnets)
* Astronomy

What are some fun science lesson plans for kindergarten?

We Answered:

You could explain the different type of clouds? That way, if it's a nice day, the kids can get fresh air and you guys can sit in the grass and look at the clouds. Then you can determine what kind they are.

The website below is really good. Better than my idea, really, it gives you a plan and materials you need.

Where can I find free lessons or guides on teaching and preparing my son for kindergarten?

We Answered:

FYI - You should learn to trust educators more. That kind of paranoia will rub off on your child eventually and he wont be able to take teachers seriously. Then he will really have a behavior issue in class.

Some books that might interest you:

"What your Kindergartener Needs to Know" E.D. Hirsch
"What your First Grader Needs to Know" E.D. Hirsch

They cover all subjects for each grade level.

Here are some websites for supplies.

Use the side menu to click on the subject of your choice

Then click on Teaching Supplies

PS - For everyone of those sad stories you described above about teachers there are thousands of inspirational ones. If you only look for the negative then thats all you'll see.

What are the benefits of teaching as a career.?

We Answered:

I have been an educator for 30+ years. I have taught pre-school and grades 7 through 12 as well as at the college level. I admire your goal. I am curious as to whether you plan to finish your education goals before getting into the classroom or at the same time as teaching.
In either case, let me try to answer some of your questions.

My insurance benefits are not the best but they are adequate. I do pay extra for dental coverage. The drug benefits are a lifesaver.

After 30+ years I have finally made it over the $50,000 mark. Other occupations pay more, but this is what I was called to do.

Vacation time is good. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring break, Summer. they all coincide with my own kids.

Sick leave is good. State and local days can accumulate. Our district has a sick leave bank that we can join. I have enough days stored up that I could call in sick for a whole year.

Continuing Ed is required but if it is at a university, tuition is at my own expense. Some things are offered by the district

Teaching young people keeps me young.

Ruben Said:

Should toddlers be taught the basics of science to better defend themselves against religious brainwashing?

We Answered:

yes, yes, yes.

Instead of teaching them to believe in fantasies such as talking snakes,
we should teach them scientific facts

then, teach them to be tolerant and to care about other people.
& our work is done.

(truthbearer... wtf are you talking about? Have you even learned about Darwin? No. He came up with the idea of evolution because of studying different species of birds on different islands that were close together that had evolved to adapt to their specific habitat. Really? Are you THAT ignorant? Please... humor me. There is strong, STRONG scientific evidence of evolution. How do you explain neanderthals? You have the same brain capacity of one.)
