What is a quick activity to demonstrate natural selection to a HS biology class? We Answered:
Get a bag of candy corn, the yellow, orange and white kind. Get a bag of M & M's mulitcolored. Count how many of each color of M & M's to start. Dump them all in together and mix in a shallow container like a 9x13 cake pan. Then have students choose a small number of M & M's maybe 3, as you pass the container around. After everyone has chosen, count the number of each color of M & M's again. There will be fewer of the red, blue and green but not so much the yellow and orange. The reason being that the yellow and orange were camoflauged by the candy corn. Thus the yellow and orange would be "naturally selected" because of their blending in with thier environment.Don't tell the kids ahead of time what you are doing. Just have them pick the candies.

Should the lecture method be discarded in favor of constructive method to teach science in schools/colleges?We Answered:
I teach general and honors chemistry in high school and there is no way I could cover all of the material I had to cover if I didn't use lectures. Opinions and beliefs are not of much use in science so long discussions are not of much use. And we don't have the time for students to derive modern science by some informal heuristics that has taken scientists over hunderds of difficult years to develop. At a high school level the math capabilities of the students are usually inadequate for the task. At best constructive methods reveal how ignorant and lost the student is and that can get frustrating and insulting after a while. There is time for asking questions, but most high school students don't know how to stay on topic or don't bother to write down questions while they are doing their homework to ask in class. They tend to ask poorly thought out questions on the spur of the moment. The teacher has to reformulate the question for them into something that is meaningful.
So I try to think of the questions that a good student might ask and pose them myself in the classroom in the "bell work" at the beginning of class. But if they haven't read their lessons the night before even that can be a waste of time.
