What else can an elementary school teacher besides teaching? We Answered:
How long have you been teaching? With a masters in reading you could probably move into a more administrative position.I have a BS in elementary education and am working toward my masters. I am certified elementary (1-6) and middle grades science (5-9). I am the tech coordinator at my school and have been teaching other teachers how to integrate technology into the classroom. This is opening opportunities for me that bring increased responsibilities accompanied by increased pay.
The best thing about being a teacher is that there are so many avenues we can take! I have been teaching for 10 years now and I'm never, never bored. There are also fabulous opportunities to work for textbook and software publishers, consulting positions (especially for reading teachers!) and many other jobs that support teaching. If you like what you do but need a change find it. There are ways within education to make a little more money and still do what you love. We'll probably never get rich (keep playing the lottery, though - you never know) but I'm making enough to get by with a few luxuries as long as I'm careful about it. Plus, I love working with the kids and working at a job I love is a huge source of satisfaction in my life.
Good luck!

What reading programs are used to teach elementary schoolers nowadays? We Answered:
Balanced Literacy. This consists of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.. This is taught through whole group (initial instruction, reading aloud, modeled writing), small group (small group instruction, guided reading, literature circles and guided writing) and independent (centers, reading buddy, independent reading and writing, seatwork).Actually Balanced Literacy is nothing new....it is whole language and phonics combined. Students have different learning styles and combining these is much more effective than teaching either in isolation.

Teaching elementary ed. in NYC?We Answered:
I have taught in the NYC school system for over 20 years. I was a Reading Specialist at the elementary level. However, due to budget cuts, that position was eliminated.Right now, because of budget cuts, there is a hiring freeze on. That means that they must hire people who are currently employed by the NYC Dept. of Education who lost their position in their home school, and not people from outside.
Now, clearly, there are specialties for which they must make exceptions. However, this isn't happening yet. If you got a degree in special ed. you'd be better situated for finding a job. However, I would not encourage you to try for a specialization in Reading! There are so many Reading teachers who are currently going back into the classroom because there are so few Reading jobs available at the elementary level right now.
