I've taught brain injured adults who have lost their ability, but some methods could apply. You really have to get back to the basics. Remember elementary school! Start with letter to sound correspondence (the letter B makes the "ba" sound, etc.) and phonics. To be able to read you have to know how to sound things out and how to blend them together. Get a list of common sight words to memorize. I'm sure you could google a list online. Definitions would also be good too.I'm guessing these adults are English speakers? So they probably have the vocabulary and language in their spoken speech, they just haven't connected what they hear/say with what they see. Doing some reading activities where they listen to a book on tape while looking at the print might help. Just don't make it overwhelming.
I think an important thing is to not embarrass them by using kiddie stuff. Use age appropriate material. And do functional activities..things they would encounter reading everyday. Road signs, newspapers, coupons, restaurant menus, grocery store items, etc. This will be something that will help them in their everyday life and something they can practice on their own.

It does seem like a lot! I focus many of my lessons around a short story or novel that we are reading. Many of my writing activities stem from a theme or conflict in a story. The grammar is something that can then be worked in with the writing assignment. The vocabulary goes with the stories. Kids need meaning in the activities that we as teachers give them, and if it connects together, the lessons flow.
