I really recommend How to Read the Bible for All its Worth by Fee and Ladd. It's a great introduction to how to read the bible and the different literary styles in it. The book also explains how to analyze the Bible (exegesis) and how to apply it to your life (hermeneutics). Once your friend knows how to approach the bible, then he just needs to read the Scriptures. Eventually he can consider a systematic theology book (like Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem). The only disclaimer I have is that Fee and Ladd translated their own version of the bible and really push for that and put down the NKJV. Just something to keep in mind while reading it.Additionally there are great websites with online sermons.
