Question for teachers who have special need students in their classroom?

We Answered:

I am a learning specialist (sped teacher) who has worked with general education teachers who have LD students in their classes.
One of the biggest adjustments they have to make is to be sure and provide outlines, notes, or graphic organizers for students who can't keep up with note-taking. Also, sometimes LD students need to be graded differently on assignments - usually I help with that.
Most of the teachers have found that it is more work to accommodate the special ed kids, and many have not had adequate training in how to do it.
From my perspective what is still needed is for general ed teachers to understand that LD is not an attitude or laziness AND then they need more training on how to adapt to that.

What is something special I can do for my students on my last day of student teaching high school?

We Answered:

Tell them individually how they've improved and what you've enjoyed about having them in your class. That is something I bet they'll always remember.

What is your philosophy about teaching special needs students in a "regular" classroom?

We Answered:

Special needs students are by definition in need of special teaching.Decisions about regular classes or seperate special needs classes should be made on an individual basis after comprehensive needs assesment. In other words treat each kid as a person with their own special set of needs.
