I don't teach to the test. I teach to the standards that are assessed by the test. The assessed standards, those concepts central to the mandates, are generally standards that most teachers in the discipline would agree are the most important concepts for the students to learn. The standards give me plenty of freedom to still select materials and create assignments that are engaging for my students.The curriculum and its goals are out of my hands. However, I still control the materials and assignments used to help my kids reach these goals. Teachers who cannot see this and still think they are just "teaching to the test" need to abandon this pity party myth--NCLB is not going away and whining about it is not helping our students.
I have no doubts that NCLB needs to be revised (why not fix what's there instead of reinventing the wheel?), but standards-based education has helped our disciplines become more focused as to what our students actually need to know. Rather than complaining, teachers would serve their students and themselves better by becoming active voices in their discipline's state and national organizations (not necessarily just NEA) so they would have a voice as to what their students need to know.

Hard to say. It could be either one--or both!As an educator, I think about the teaching/learning act as an artful negotiation. I need to help the learner connect with his prior knowledge and to give him enough guidance that he can make sense of whatever new information I'm giving him.
That said, it's also true that sometimes the learner's brain is "wired" differently, and the learner might have difficulty making the connections that most learners would make in a given situation.
There are lots of reasons that the teaching/learning event could be breaking down. It might be the teacher, it might be the learner, or it might be both. But if I had to pick one person who needed to make an adjustment I'd pick the teacher. After all, it's the teacher who has both the knowledge (the information to be taught) and the skill (the strategies to teach effectively). I wouldn't call it a "deficiency," but I would suggest that the teacher continue to try more and different ways to get the message across.

Well, this is coming from a freshman in high school with an IEP for emotional problems.Make it fun; offer your support. I know, it sounds unprofessional but get real. I love it when my teachers understand me or pretend to understand me. I like it when they offer support. Maybe you should try?
You will be surpized at how much a student will work if you have a personal "connection" with them.
Working with kids like me, takes thought outside of the box! :D

At that age, (most) do not understand the importance of learning.
