What are some tips to teach writing to elementary students with learning disabilities?

We Answered:

Well...what type of piece of writing do you want to teach them? Always model and practice. Use a visual organizer..nothing too complicated. Try to pick a subject that will peak their interest. The writing process takes a long time!!! Sometimes you should have your students write without taking it to a final. Be very specific about the expectations for editing...capitals at the beginning of each sentence and ending marks. They can highlight the beginning word of each sentence with green and highlight the ending mark in red. That will bring attention to this skill. If the sentence is too long, they may have a run-on.
I have tons of ideas, but I need to know the actual piece to be written and the ages. How about a letter?(I just thought of that one) Good luck!

What is the best format for teaching resume writing to high school students?

We Answered:

Key areas that need to be emphasized are:
academic achievements (high gpa, honor societies, awards, certificates)

organizations they belong to --they don't need to just list them, but they need to put any experience or accomplishments that comes along with it. (when I was a high schooler, I was a member of the beta club--I helped out with different activities such as writing and collecting cards from students to send to troops, buying presents for a child who was on the angel tree list, and I also volunteered at a blood drive)

Volunteer exerience--and list their duties and skills they may have developed that could be used for the job they're applying for

And any skills they may possess: public speaking, computer skills (list the actual programs-Word, Excel, etc.), foreign languages, fundraising, etc.

Example headings that could be used for their resume: Education, Honors and Awards, Leadership, Skills and Abilities, Community Service (or Volunteer Experience), Extracurricular Activities, Achievements

As far as what order to put the information in: it really doesn't matter as long as the information they see as really important is placed somewhere that really stands out

Here's the link to a handout about Resume Guidelines. It was composed primarily for college students, but I think some of the information could also be helpful to high schoolers.

Here are some titles that may help:

The Elements of Style by William Strunk Jr.and E.B. White
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/105…

Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/002…

Writers Inc.: A Student Handbook for Writing And Learning by Sebranek, Patrick Sebranek, Dave Kemper, and Verne Meyer
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/002…

In addition to the above suggestions, there are several more titles that can be used to supplement the textbook. This depends on your teaching style and the competence level of your students.

I would also look at the textbook publisher's website for anciallaries and web-based teaching resources. Many of these could be packed for free or at a nominal cost.

Hope this helps.

With my stats, is there an Asian town/city you recommend teaching English?

We Answered:

Hi Latte- I've taught TESL/TEC to international teachers for over 12 yrs - most of them from Asia. Race is less of an issue in Asia than in easter Europe. However, here are a couple of amazing websites you might want to check out and post your questions on there. One of them is http://www.eslcafe.com/ - the other is http://www.transitionsabroad.com/ - ESL cafe has a huge forum where you can get very straight answers from others already there or having had experience there. Good luck.

Help.... please material for teaching writing?

We Answered:

I think it's much too structured. Stick with the writing process. You teach a min-lesson in grammar or spelling at the beginning and take a status of the class (what are they working on, which step of the WP have they reached today--will they be editing, revising, rough drafting, etc.) Give them plenty of in class writing time. And have them keep a portfolio of their work.
