Eugene Said:

how do you go from being an automotive mechanic to teaching automotive technology to others?

We Answered:

When I read your first question above, I thought you meant teaching high school vocational classes. For this, most states have developed an alternative path to teacher certification with a shortened college program of classes in education. To find out what your state does, search the state department of education web site.

As for a technical or vocational school, they may not require any particular certification. It would be more about experience in both your field of specialty and teaching something, though not necessarily the same subject. Try to think about how you could spin something on your resume as teaching experience. Have you trained any other mechanics in your shop on a new procedure? Ever teach Sunday School? Shown someone how to drive a manual transmission? Coached youth sports team? Helped out in an adult literacy program or mentored a high school student interested in auto tech?

If nothing comes to mind, you might start looking for volunteer opportunities in some area that would fill this gap.

I would also contact the Human Resources departments of Lincoln Tech and some similar schools and ask this question of them? It's a small investment of time that could begin a process that gets you where you want to go.

What are the current methods of technology enhanced teaching in classrooms?

We Answered:

Well, we're using cds and interactive dvds in the classrooms as well as multi media projectors. Is it effective? To a certain degree in that there are no longer cumbersome charts to put up. Whether the students retain the information...well that's a whole other issue.

why is technology useful in the teaching of history?

We Answered:

It's now possible to find millions of old documents online. Public domain books, photos, and other media forms are easily available online. Documentaries and other useful and/or educational videos are also streamed from a number of sites, like pbs.org or Hulu.

Some famous people from history have had a great deal of their work placed online. All of Charles Darwin's notebooks have been scanned and placed online, for example, and people work to transcribe them into digital text at http://darwin-online.org.uk. His books and articles are also readily available at that site. Such a resource would be invaluable to a biology or history teacher looking for material on Darwin. This goes far beyond what most libraries have available (although most libraries do have internet access!)

Why aren't technical schools teaching solar technology along with other trades?

We Answered:

We are a gasoline based economy. The funding is not made available for solar programs at State Universities. You can study geology and everything related to oil exploration, because the government has made the funding of these programs in public universities available. When our government gets different leadership with an eye for the urgency of the need for developing this technology , things will turn around.

Meanwhile you can study solar technology at Oxford, England, and in Japan at most universities, and in Germany at most engineering universities...

Solar technology us usually taught as part of an aerospace engineering program.

Maybe you will be the one to make a change!

help me with my research entitled the effectiveness of assistive technology in teaching visually impaired?

We Answered:

I assume that this a college project. If so, your school will have the ERIC database available to you, including its special education supplement. Here you can search for journal articles and other publications on your subject.

If you go to www.eric.ed.gov, you will get to the basic indexing publication. Suggest you click Advanced Search. In the three Keywords boxes you could search
assistive devices
visual impairments
effectiveness
and see if the publications that are retrieved are useful. Then modify your search as seems appropriate.

Edgar Said:

What types of items should I put in a technology portfolio for teaching?

We Answered:

Depends on how you use tech. Make sure people know you know the basics.
