Science teaching buzzwords?

We Answered:

I agree that, in an interview situation, you want to be aware of what's going on. Knowing some of the latest key terms will definitely give you an edge. There is nothing wrong with wanting to do your homework--in fact, it's a great idea!

Some school websites are very instructive on the subject, and can give you a good window into what's new in that district. The state department of education website can also be very helpful. Be sure that you are aware of the state standards, and whatever state testing is coming down the road. (NCLB is coming to science--many states are now testing in fourth and seventh grades! So an awareness of high stakes testing is good.) Also, there is a big push in many districts for reading in the content areas. Many middle school readers can't cope with typical science textbooks, so you need to find strategies to help them gain information from text. Talk about using reading strategies, anticipation guides, three-level guides, reading road maps, and writing to learn. (Search for any one of these topics and you'll find more than you can imagine!)

Differentiation is another hot topic right now. Differentiated instruction is built on the idea that no two students have the same background or needs--duh. So teachers need to adapt their instruction. You can differentiate by content (what the students learn), process (how they learn it) or product (how they show that they've learned). ASCD has great books on the topic, plus a simple search will probably yield a lot.

You will probably be asked some questions about classroom management. At EducationWorld.com, you can check out ideas for classroom management. Responsive Classroom has some nice ideas, as does the Fred Jones website (Tools for Teaching). You'll also want to know some characteristics of middle school students. (They are very social, beginning to identify with their peers, need structure and routines, benefit from hands-on instruction, etc.)

Finally, check out the NSTA website. There are many more resources available. You can even sign up for an email newsletter about science education.

Good luck!

Has science teaching failed us?

We Answered:

many people have forgotten (or taken for granted) that our civilization is built on science and scientific theories. premature babies are saved due to science, the luxuries many of us enjoy are based on hard science.

we can never know what is going to benefit us unless we EXPLORE the universe from the largest galaxy to the smallest subatomic particle.

i believe scientists are partly to blame (i'm going for a chemistry degree btw). Scientists have to be able to educate the public on what they are doing and why they are doing it. the public will not fund science they do not understand and people fear/don't like what they don't understand. just look at the number of people who think the LHC will destroy the earth. Scientists should be honored like sports stars are (heck they do more to benefit society than sports stars) but if the public cannot understand what it is they are paying for, they will always look down on new scientific endeavors.

What is the teaching (supervising) license requirements in Ontario "Canada"?

We Answered:

There are very few teaching jobs available in Canada right now. You might get lucky with chemistry, but there are high school qualified teachers in our city who are working in call centres.

You need to take some Canadian education courses to qualify in Canada but you can work on supply while you take them.

What's the best way to get into science teaching?

We Answered:

I'm in Missouri and based on what you have said, in our state you would probably have enough science classes completed but would have to take about a year of education classes full time and pass the praxis exam for your subject before you would be certified to teach science. But the subject is in demand so your job prospects would be good.
